My kids are 3, 8, and 10 and I read to them every single night. We get into bed about 30-45 minutes before it's time to go to sleep, the 3 year picks a book and after that I read a few chapters from a book for the 2 older guys (we just got finished reading 4 differnt Roald Dahl books, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach, George's Marvelous Medicine and Danny the Champion of the World, I had never read these books before and couldn't wait to get to them each night. If I gave my older boys a choice they would play video games instead, but I don't give them a choice, lol.

I read to the kids when they were younger. Some of my kids are now readers and some are not. We have hundreds of books, on a variety of topics all over the house so there is lots of opportunity to find a good book.

When I was young, I loved reading Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys too. They still came in hard bound at that time. I still have those books with me.

Yes, I read to my son every night. He loves hearing stories.

Hi Sasha! Thanks for the link pointing to my column entitled, "Why a book?" I loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, too. It's never too late or early for anyone to develop a love for reading. They don't have to start with Madame Bovary or War and Peace or even pretend that it's the kind of classic fare that they prefer. A good magazine article can be just as fulfilling to read as well. I also find that reading a lot improves my writing. I do hope that your own experience and that of your other readers would help spread the word about the benefits of reading. Thanks again!

We love to read! :) Its a good thing that in my son's home schooling program, they don't have reading tests. They have book reports instead. 1 book/quarter. Ok no?
