Behind every language lies a whole different world. What do you think came first, the language or the culture behind it? According to linguist Ferdinand de Saussure, a language is what builds up reality, and not the other way around. This can be understood only when we are aware of how much a language can limit or expand our mind. A language is a system, a structure, and we can move only within its limits. Therefore, it is convenient to know more than one language in order to ‘switch’ from one system to the other, to be able to willingly open up our minds to new concepts and ideas. The mind works as a protractor: any little structural movement or alteration can lead to a major change of route when seen from a different perspective, from a longer distance. In fact, that is what happens in life: you never know where the smallest movement or decision will lead to.
