MYM – Mayon Volcano

That’s the beautiful Mayon Volcano in Legazpi, Albay. Below is a photo of the people evacuating because of the threat of volcanic eruption…

Residents are evacuated to safer grounds after the volcano spewed ash twice last Wednesday. Mayon volcano was known to have killed so many people when it erupted 16 years ago. But according to the government bureau concerned, alert level remains the same for the active volcano despite what happened and will only be raised when the magma level changes. Thank God for that.

Last Saturday morning, my sister and I went to Dangwa, a popular local place here in Metro Manila where flowers abound. You can go to Dangwa and find almost all kinds of flowers. Every year, before November 1st/going to the cemetery, we would go and buy flowers, and then my sister would arrange it. You can buy pre-arranged flowers but it’s cheaper to pick the flowers you want individually and prepare it in a vase or pot yourself. But this time around, we opted for the pre-arranged ones because you wouldn’t believe the prices of flowers. It was sky-high! We were told that it’s because of the recent typhoons and how it was really difficult to get the flowers because Baguio was affected by the typhoons.
We bought three flower arrangements and junked the idea of buying the way we used to.

It seems that prices are shooting up left and right because of the typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng that hit the country. My sister and I bought candles for the coming All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. We were both shocked by the tags on the candles. A small round candle costs about 250 pesos (roughly US$5). Ordinarily, that would cost about 50 to 70 pesos (US$1-1.50).
November 1 is a legal holiday here in the Philippines. Most families go to the cemeteries to visit their departed loved ones. We are very big on this celebration so companies selling candles and other items to commemorate the dead are selling like hotcakes at least two to three weeks before the actual holiday. And with the recent calamities, expect the companies to even mark up their commodities to get back some of the profits they lost.
