Father's Day confusion

Last Sunday was really funny. A lot of people thought it was already Father’s Day. My cousins and an aunt texted me and called us up, greeting my dad. Some even went to our house to personally greet him. We told them that we know Father’s Day celebration is on the 21st of June. We know for a fact that Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the 2nd of May and Father’s Day is on the 3rd week of June. But according to those who greeted my dad, the priests told the people who attended the mass to greet all the fathers they know a Happy Father’s Day. Thus, the greetings.

My siblings and I got confused as well. Was it moved to an earlier date? We didn’t want my dad to think that we wouldn’t be celebrating the day so my sister whipped up some yummy dishes for dinner. It is now a running joke at home that we will also be celebrating on the 21st as well, just to be sure.

And you know what? Father’s Day here in the Philippines is really on June 21!

Rare diseases

If you think about it, in this day and age when almost all diseases are already curable, we still hear about so many new ones that are truly scary. Like mesothelioma. This type of cancer is caused by asbestos. It is said that when a person is diagnosed with this disease, it’s already in the advance stage. Men are more prone to mesothelioma, but there are also women diagnosed with this rare form of cancer.

There are many rare forms of cancer that are being treated all over the world at the moment. The medical world is doing their best to find a cure to each and every one of it. I remember when my mom was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney disease known as Amyloidosis. There was no commercially available cure for it in 2002 until my mom passed away in 2005. The doctors could only sustain the life of the other organs to prolong the life of my mom. But it also ended.

I hope that in time, say 5 or 10 years from now, all known diseases in this world will have a counter cure.

No to Con-Ass!

Thousands joined the rally against the plan for a constituent assembly (Con-Ass). It was reported that more than 10,000 people trooped to the intersection of Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas in Makati City. People are suspecting that the planned Con Ass is only a means for the current president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to extend her term as a president, or if not, become our first prime minister (should our government become parliamentary).

Baguio: My adopted hometown

I miss Baguio! Baguio City is the Summer Capital of the Philippines. My family and I adopted the place as our hometown. We love the weather and the city’s feel of everything within reach. Tourists spots and malls are within the city. You can walk at night to eat and shop without the fear of being accosted. When my sisters and I attended my best friend’s wedding there, we even went out every night after midnight to eat and have coffee. We stayed there for four days at a hotel along Session Road. Everything was peaceful.

And then news about riots, late night fights, and other type of blights on the peace and security of Baguio at night broke out. It somehow painted a different picture of my adopted hometown. It clashed against the Baguio that we learned to love.

I hope that the city government of Baguio will do something about these threats to the peace and security of Baguio at night. I am sure that the city government doesn’t want to turn away people like us who have made the city our own already, and especially the tourists.

I miss Baguio and I hope that when we go back it will be the same Baguio that we learned to love: safe, peaceful and a haven for vacationers like me.

The controversial videos of the moment

Almost every person in the country who has a television set at home, or internet connection for that matter, is talking about the sex videos of an infamous cosmetic doctor and his girlfriends/flings. It became so popular because one of the women in the (supposedly) 40 videos is a well-known sexy star here in the Philippines.

All news programs, broadsheets, tabloids, magazines and every known media outlet reported the videos. Those who have seen it said that the women obviously didn’t know about the existence of the recording device. Women all over the country were outraged by the violation done to their kind. I never saw the videos, only still photos sent by a friend. Still, I was shocked by it. The doctor clearly has a penchant for videotaping his ‘adventures’ and the women he likes. It is even being reported that at least two wholesome young stars were videotaped, using a camera phone, while dressing after a body scrub session at the beauty clinic where this doctor previously worked.

Now, the doctor is under fire for the proliferation of the videos. Someone sold the videos to pirates who were selling it like hotcakes. Somebody else uploaded it to the net. The sexy star is crying foul because after the spread of the videos, she lost countless of jobs and opportunities. Another woman from one of the videos is an upcoming star in a giant network in the country. Said to be a doctor, too. She was said to have almost lost the role given to her for a Korean series remake. A Brazilian model fled the country. And other women who had a ‘session’ with the doctor are quaking in their boots, waiting for their name to be dragged into the controversy.

I believe the doctor should be punished in some way. If he didn’t videotape their intimate moments, no videos will be spreading quicker than the A(N1H1) virus. But something’s bugging me…

He said that the reason he videotapes his sexcapades is because it serves as a sort of journal for him. Instead of words, he uses videos. How is this any different from a blogger who secretly writes about someone s/he met and been intimate with? He didn’t sell the videos. It was actually private until his doctor-girlfriend asked three common friends to retrieve his laptop for her. Then the videos were discovered. Then there’s the controversy.

So who should really be punished if you think about it: The one who videotaped it all but has no intention of having it viewed by others? Or those persons(?) who took it from him and spread it for everyone to see?
