Unexpected family friends

It has never occurred to me to be friends with my old boss. I mean, we say hi and hello when I pass him by the hallway of the office but that’s about the extent of our relationship. Just last summer, I was surprised to see him at a beach resort in the south. He was with his wife and son and I was with my family. I was supposed to steer clear of him because I don’t want to engage in small talk, in a very awkward way. But he surprised me when he greeted me and my family. He chatted with my dad and my uncles about a lot of things, golf, the wine of the month club that he belongs to, resorts, national issues and a lot more. And then after that, he invited me and my family to attend an occasion at his home. Well, the rest is history. His family and mine are now friends.
