MYM - Candles

It seems that prices are shooting up left and right because of the typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng that hit the country. My sister and I bought candles for the coming All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. We were both shocked by the tags on the candles. A small round candle costs about 250 pesos (roughly US$5). Ordinarily, that would cost about 50 to 70 pesos (US$1-1.50).

November 1 is a legal holiday here in the Philippines. Most families go to the cemeteries to visit their departed loved ones. We are very big on this celebration so companies selling candles and other items to commemorate the dead are selling like hotcakes at least two to three weeks before the actual holiday. And with the recent calamities, expect the companies to even mark up their commodities to get back some of the profits they lost.

Strict on dad's health

I must admit that I am hard on my dad. I am strict with him regarding his health and I would lay a guilt trip on him if it meant he’ll take care of his health better. I hate that he is letting others tempt him when he is already doing great.

One of my fears with regards to my dad is him having colon problems. I know that this is very common on older men. My dad’s not getting any younger so I want him to be more careful with what he eats or the medicines he drinks. I always tell my dad that we already lost a parent. We don’t want to lose another soon. So I am strict with him about his health not because I get a kick out of being the parent but because I don’t want my siblings and I to lose the only remaining parent we have.

Next summer

Left homeless

My heart goes out to the many families left homeless by Bagyong Ondoy. It is hard to see your house that you worked hard for left to ruins. I know that it’s also hard to part with it, especially if you’ve called it home for the past 10 years, more so three decades. A family stuck to their home despite the danger it posed because according to the matriarch, they’ve lived there for more than 30 years already. I know it’s bad to be too much attached to any material thing but you can’t fault these people. Blood and sweat were shed just to be able to afford a house of their own. And then to leave it just like that? I am sure each one of us won’t be able to do it easily.

We are lucky that the place of our residence is on an elevated area. We didn’t experience any flooding and our street looked normal if you wouldn’t look to the left and to the right. Neighboring streets were neck-deep in flood water.

I hope everyone’s safe. Classes in all levels are suspended for this week and will resume Monday next week already. There is a brewing storm about to enter the country within the day and I hope every one is prepared for this.
