Back to the original one

It pays to save files! I checked my email this morning for a copy of the original customized theme I asked from SimplyWP. Found this one. Including the original header.

You might be wondering why I had to get the original theme… You see, last night, I almost got a really good opportunity from a program I am a member of. Unfortunately, when the administrator checked this blog, he got a virus alert. Naturally, he disapproved this blog’s bid! Too bad, really.

As I’ve said before, I asked help to determine where this virus is coming from. I was told that it’s already okay. I changed databases just to be sure. I cleaned out everything. And then, to be told that this blog still has that darn virus… Aargh!

After analyzing everything, I deduced that the virus might be in the themes folder. Because when I changed databases, the only thing I uploaded was the customized theme folder. And remember that remv.php WordPress exploit? Might have something to do with it. Anyway, what I did today was, I deleted the old one and then uploaded the original folder. Tweaked things a bit, put a different background, put back the old favicon and voila!

I hope that this will work now. If not, I don’t know what else to do

McAffee Warning

To everyone who has sent a message regarding the Trojan McAffee is warning them about in this blog, a huge THANK YOU! I don’t know how to get rid of it so I asked for professional help. I am using AVG and a friend is using Norton. I checked on both and everything’s clear. Hopefully.

If and when you see another warning, McAffee users, please leave me a message here or at my EC account. I appreciate the concern.

Still under maintenance

UPDATE:

I don’t know what happened to my theme. The rightbar just won’t get fixed! It keeps sliding down under the leftbar and however I tweak the stylesheet, it just won’t cooperate. It frustrated the hell out of me that I slept early instead of focusing on fixing it last night.

So now I am back to fixing this sidebars… If I don’t wreck this theme first, that is.

Alexa Rank

There was a sudden dip in Alexa ranking across the blogosphere the other day when they did their usual update. I wondered how come some of my blogs went back to the millionth rank and one got back a No Data.

I contacted Alexa support to ask what happened. And I got this response from them:

So my border was right. It was a system glitch. Anyway, as they have said in their email, expect the rankings to be back to normal within the day. I just like how they reply fast to emails sent to them. This is the third time I used their contact form and in all three cases, they responded within a few hours.

WordPress exploit

I was not able to post anything this past weekend because of the stupid WordPress exploit that happened to most of my blogs. I had to remove the installation and start fresh. I don’t want to simply upgrade the WordPress version I am using. I want to make sure that I got rid of whatever bugs that exploit did to my php files. Thank goodness the only thing on my to-do list last weekend was to check a truck rental that my dad asked me to. Other than that, I devoted my free time to fixing the issues with the remv.php file that Bluehost told me about.

Yesterday morning, I got an email from Bluehost Support as follows…

Dear Webmaster for (deleted),

It has come to our attention that an exploit for WordPress 2.6.3 and below is running rampant through the internet, and has been discovered on your account for (deleted). Due to the upcoming holiday we have decided to allow your website to stay online, the current file remv.php.hacked will be in your homedirectory under (deleted)/wp-content/themes. You have seven days to remove this file and update your version of WordPress and any modules you are using. If you have not performed the removal and update by the end of the 7th day, out of respect to other customers we will be forced to shutdown your site until the requested removal and updates have been completed.

In addition, Fantastico does not have the latest version of WordPress which is 2.6.5. This means you will need to upgrade WordPress using SimpleScripts. You can easily do this from the cPanel. Go to SimpleScripts under “Software Services” and click on WordPress under “Blogs.” At the bottom you’ll see an option to “Convert a Fantastico Installation.” Clicking on this will list the installations available for conversion.

I set aside the email thinking I’d deal with it when I get home from my movie date with my girl friends. But while inside the movie house, Tita Liza texted me telling me that this blog as well as two of my other blogs were showing a syntax error. I immediately thought of the email I received from Bluehost.

When I got home, I checked my blogs right away. Yes, it was showing a syntax error. I checked my files and I saw a remv.php file in the themes folder. The same thing happened to my border. So I immediately upgraded my blogs to the newest version of WordPress (2.6.5) and I used Simple Scripts this time, instead of Fantastico. I deleted my entire database and created new ones for each blog.

A couple of hours ago, I talked to Reyna Elena about his site being hacked. When I read his post, I saw that the same thing happened to him. So I was thinking (and still speculating) as to what truly happened. Reynz is also using Bluehost for ReynaElena.com and I am using Bluehost as well. Is the security breach a fault of Bluehost or we were chosen by this hacker, if it’s even hacking at all?
