My friend, Mim, loves to create designs that she incorporates in her shirts most of the time. Food Friday: Champorado

Champorado (Tagalog: tsamporado) is a sweet chocolate rice porridge in Filipino cuisine. It is traditionally made by boiling sticky/sweet rice and cocoa powder giving it a distinctly brown color. However, dry champorado mixes, which may be found in some Asian food stores, are prepared by adding just boiling water. It can be served hot or cold and with milk and sugar to taste. It is served usually at breakfast and sometimes together with dried fish locally known as tuyo.

The pudding becomes very thick and the lighter milk helps to “loosen” it. It’s almost like eating “chocolate oatmeal.” It can be eaten as a snack or dessert as well. Sweet rice can be found in most Asian aisles of a grocery store.

I love eating champorado for breakfast. Not everyday, though. At least once in a while. I know some people eat this with tuyo but I haven’t tried it yet. Is it good?

Breast Cancer Awareness

help spread the awareness on the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ month of June. Please help convey the importance of regular examination and early detection of breast cancer in order to catch this disease when it first erupts, maximizing the chance of survival and recovery.

One of my aunts has breast cancer. She’s been battling the disease for a few years now and thank goodness she is strong enough to do it. With the help of modern medicine, the love and support of family and friends, she is successful in fighting the disease so far.

These are some facts I got from Cancer Research web site. How many people survive breast cancer?

• - More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before
• - Breast cancer survival rates have been improving for more than twenty years
• - In the 1970s around 5 out of 10 breast cancer patients survived beyond five years. Now it’s 8 out of 10
• - Breast cancer survival rates are significantly higher among women from the most affluent areas compared to women living in the most deprived areas
• - Breast cancer survival rates are better the earlier the cancer is diagnosed
• - Around 9 out of 10 of women diagnosed with stage I breast cancer survives beyond five years. This drops to around 1 out of 10 diagnosed with stage I

Prevention is better than cure, of course. In the case of my aunt, she felt there was a lump in her breast but due to so many things happening in her life that time, she ignored it and just thought it might go away in time. But well, as it turned out, had she made the decision to see a doctor right away, it would have been removed and that’s it. She waited a few years though before seeing a doctor. By that time, she was already in stage 1 cancer.

So I advise women out there to have their breasts checked if they feel something wrong with it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a false alarm, an unnecessary worry on your part. What is important is that you’re doing your part in preventing it.

Weekend Snapshot #23 - Haircut

I had a haircut a few days ago. I easily get irritated when my hair grows past my shoulders. Besides, it’s still hot here in Manila despite the rain.

A thriving commercial district

I know someone who is looking at several commercial real estate properties. She will be building a commercial complex and is looking at a place that has a potential to become a bustling commercial district. She has seen a few places here in the metro that started out small and are now thriving districts. If I also have the capital to buy a commercial real estate property I would have done so already. There is a commercial district near our residence and I have seen how it started until it grew to what it is now. It is a good business and a profitable one at that.

Taking up Nursing

I learned that my cousin, DJ, who’s the same age as my youngest sibling, James, will be taking up Nursing. He is quite excited about it, been telling almost all of us about his decision. I admire his bravery. I once thought of being a medical student but then I realized I don’t like the sight of too much blood and the smell of open wounds and all. And touching it while doing an examination… Of course there exam gloves that one can use when doing all those examinations but still.

Well, Nursing will be good for DJ. He will be the first medical person in the family. We will support him anyway we can.

Food Friday: Home-made Spaghetti

Pardon the quality of the photo, I took this shot using my old phone camera and I was so hungry already my hands were shaking *lol*

We are a family who loves to eat pasta. There are days when dinner would be just pasta and some garlic bread. My sister cooked this one and it may not look good in the photo but trust me, it was delicious! We love our spaghetti a bit sweet and spicy. And sis does just that. Plus she makes our garlic bread and it is yummy as well!

Made me soooo hungry looking at this one. Will eat champorado in a while. That would be my next Food Friday entry

Upgrading to WordPress 2.5

Bluehost’s Fantastico does not have yet the latest version of WordPress. I have yet to upgrade to the latest version, I am still using WP 2.3.3 which is really great with uploading photos in your posts. I have read mixed reactions to WP 2.5 that’s why I held off upgrading. Sure it looks a lot sexier than the old dashboard but I don’t know. My other blogs are already using the 2.5 version but I find it confusing than the old one. Or maybe I haven’t explored it yet.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts on the latest version.

BEWARE of Blog-for-Bucks!!!

I know several bloggers have been contacted by either Michelle Go, a certain Skylar Sinclaire or now, someone using the name Jean Carrey. They are offering link orders at $5 per link for a monetizing program named Blog-For-Bucks (blog-for-bucks.com). I was able to do link orders for them in another blog of mine. My sister was able to do one set of orders for them. Both payments were delayed but it was okay. The delay was just over two weeks.

Then my cousin did 3 links for them. After he submitted the links to Skylar, he was promised payment after three weeks. Fine with him because there are other programs paying a month after. The day of the supposed remittance, he did not receive any payment, not even an email explaining why they cannot remit payment on that day. After two days, he emailed Skylar asking for an explanation why the $15 (YES, FIFTEEN FREAKING DOLLARS!) was not yet remitted to him. No email. Nothing. After a few days, another email. And then he sent an email directly to blog-for-bucks via their submission form on their homepage. No response. NOTHING.

And then I thought of emailing Michelle Go because she was the one who contacted me before. I received a response two days after from Jean Carrey (notice the similarity of the name to a famous Hollywood comedian). She said that apparently, Skylar resigned already and they cannot access his email. Yeah, right! Skylar is using [email protected] so you know right away that they can easily manipulate this email at their cpanel. Jean/Michelle is using a gmail account ([email protected]).

I am just angry on my cousin’s behalf because for $15 they are shortchanging him of what’s due him. And you know what, my cousin emailed them SEVERAL TIMES! I don’t know what kind of a company this Blog-For-Bucks is but I tell you, BEWARE OF THEM! Sa $15 nanloloko na sila ng blogger, what more kung mas malaki pang amount!
