Filipino pageant contestants using an interpreter
The issue on Gloria Diaz’s statement regarding Filipino beauty queens using an interpreter is, in my opinion, blown out of proportion. She said that it is about time beauty queens consider using an interpreter so they can express themselves better in beauty pageants. Is there anything wrong with that?
I don’t see anything wrong with using an interpreter. It won’t lessen a woman’s beauty or status when she does use one. Look at Miss Mexico who won the 2010 Miss Universe crown. She used an interpreter and she won! There would be no points taken away from a contestant should she opt to use an interpreter. In fact, using one will allow her to think more clearly and to be more confident. There would be no need for her to compose what she has to say in her mind. That adds to the nervousness of a contestant.
Venus Raj, Philippines’ bet in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant, was already a shoo-in when she was picked as one of the top five contestants. She was clearly a crowd favorite. Her toughest competitor, Miss Ireland, was already out. If you watched the pageant, when it was already the Final Question, you could see Venus nervous. It was very obvious whenever the camera would hit her position. Her face was no longer confident. She was clearly anticipating the question that would be asked of her. And then came her turn. As you already know, she bungled that one. It cost her the crown.
Gloria Diaz was right. Had Venus used an interpreter, she could have expressed herself more clearly. No “major, major mistake” that people remembered from her. Remember Miriam Quiambao? The same thing happened. And other contestants in before and in between them. Ms. Diaz meant well in what she said about some Filipinos having a hard time speaking in English. It’s a fact. She just wants to remind beauty contestants like Venus to consider the use of an interpreter so that speaking in English during question and answer portions won’t cost us another crown.

My sister recently bought a notebook computer that she can use for her online work just like mine. It was very affordable and not what we were expecting the price to be. I guess we went shopping for one at the right time.
I am saving up for another notebook computer and this time around it’ll be for my brother. He is an IT college student and well, since he’s dealing with technology, of course, he needs a computer with him. I am targeting early November to get him one.
Creative marketing idea
I just love how creative the marketing department of a vendor I used to deal with. I saw them with pop displays at their stall at the mall and they are really attracting the crowd with their colorful displays. They are also giving away some promotional items so that added to the lure.
I don’t know if their marketing director still remembers me but I saw him look my way. I would have wanted to say hi and see if there’s still recognition but there’s just too many people in their stall that time that I opted not to add to the crowd.
Changes in this blog
I haven’t been updating this blog a lot. If you notice, I only update this when I have to say something about a national issue. Or a topic that is being talked about by the blogging world. This blog used to be a very personal one. But things changed along the way. I started writing more about my opinions on what’s happening in the society. And there’s a lot. I also rant here about my experience on local companies’ customer service.
I think I will be changing things a bit here once again. Something that will make visitors stay a little longer. Something that will make me smile again whenever I see this blog.
I am looking for a new theme. Stay tuned on the changes I am about to make here.
It’s a baby girl!
What do you do when you know someone close to you just gave birth? How about sending out birth announcements to the people you both know?
That’s what Lee did when her sister gave birth to a baby girl. Since Lee’s brother-in-law is out of the country, he thought he might as well take it upon himself to send out announcements. Anyway, Lee will coordinate with brother-in-law before anything else.
Bumbing into doors
I think I should start getting plastic knobs for all the doors at home. Our little girl can’t seem to avoid bumping into the knobs. It worries me that she would bump her head really hard that it will harm her.
When you have a kid at home, it is best to check furniture you have. It might not be best to have it at home where accidents can happen anytime.
