I watched a movie called Looper with my sisters this afternoon. Here’s the blurb on what the movie was about…
In Looper, time travel is invented by the year 2074 and, though immediately outlawed, is used by criminal organizations to send those they want killed into the past where they are killed by “loopers”, assassins paid with silver bars strapped to their targets. Joe, a looper, encounters himself when his older self is sent back in time to be killed.
It was really good in my opinion. I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt and he’s the star of the movie. Time travel is also something I am fascinated about so that’s a plus.
Anyway, I just kept thinking about the future, what it would be like and how technology can actually set us back if you really think about it. It can be used by unscrupulous individuals and make the world a worse place instead of making it better. Criminals can rule a country and it can happen.
It just scares me to think of a future that is so high tech yet worse than it is today.

Miss Angola Leila Lopes is 2011 Miss Universe winner. First runner-up is Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine, second runner-up is Priscila Machado of Brazil, third runner-up is Shamcey Supsup of Philippines, and fourth runner-up is Luo Zilin of China.

Once again, Philippines lost its bid to win the Miss Universe crown. Last year, it was Venus Raj and her major, major answer in the Q&A portion of the pageant. She placed fourth runner-up and came home to a crowd that was major, major nanghihinayang. She should have bagged the crown, in everyone’s opinion, except for that ghastly error in answering a simple question.
Raj was asked by American actor William Baldwin the one biggest mistake that she made in her life and what she did to make it right.
She replied: “You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence I can say that there’s nothing major, major problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!” she said.

She was understandably nervous. Who wouldn’t be when you are in front of a large crowd and you are very much aware that your answer will make or break your chances in winning the pageant, right? And this is one reason why I am offering my unsolicited advice…
My unsolicited advice to future contestants: use Tagalog in answering the Q & A portion! It’s about time the country’s representative be more comfortable in answering those insanely simple questions! Oprah Winfrey on Miss Universe 2011 results: “I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”

When a contestant uses an interpreter, she still has a few seconds to think and break down the question before answering! Makes sense, right?
So why not use an interpreter in the next pageant? Using an interpreter doesn’t mean the contestant is stupid. She can understand English and can also speak the same. But if it’s more comfortable for the contestant to answer in her native tongue, so be it! We’ve seen these in winners of the past. Why not take a leaf out of their books and use it to our advantage?
Just a thought.
I just read that two bloggers are being sued over the Willing Willie controversy wherein a 6-year-old boy danced like a macho dancer in Willie Revillame‘s show. The boy Jan-Jan Suan danced in a segment of the said show and while the kid was crying, obviously humiliated over what’s being asked of him, Willie was laughing along with his live audience even asking the kid to do it again and again.

I am currently watching the entertainment talk show The Buzz. Host Boy Abunda is interviewing Sharon Cuneta about the issue surrounding her Marie France billboard advertisement. This is the said billboard that is getting so much flak now…
The Sharon Cuneta Marie France billboard with the “before” and “after” shots of her is getting so much attention because people are saying that it is misleading. The photo above of the “after” shot is thinner than the Sharon that everyone sees on TV. Here she was in her press conference for the Marie France weight loss endorsement…
It’s obvious that there’s a ‘manipulation’ done on the photo of the “after” shot if you look at her photo from the press con. There were rumors that the billboard which can be found along EDSA would be taken down due to the violation on Truth in Advertising. But Marie France was quick to deny the rumors. They even went so far as to say that there wasn’t any manipulation (read: photoshop) done on the “after” shot of Sharon in the billboard. But can someone please explain the obvious difference between Sharon the “after” shot versus Sharon on TV now?!?
Sharon said on The Buzz that her credibility would speak for itself. The billboard was truthful. But she couldn’t explain clearly why she looked thinner on the “after” shot than her body size on TV.
I am wondering then… where’s the truth in that?!?
The issue on Gloria Diaz’s statement regarding Filipino beauty queens using an interpreter is, in my opinion, blown out of proportion. She said that it is about time beauty queens consider using an interpreter so they can express themselves better in beauty pageants. Is there anything wrong with that?
I don’t see anything wrong with using an interpreter. It won’t lessen a woman’s beauty or status when she does use one. Look at Miss Mexico who won the 2010 Miss Universe crown. She used an interpreter and she won! There would be no points taken away from a contestant should she opt to use an interpreter. In fact, using one will allow her to think more clearly and to be more confident. There would be no need for her to compose what she has to say in her mind. That adds to the nervousness of a contestant.
Venus Raj, Philippines’ bet in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant, was already a shoo-in when she was picked as one of the top five contestants. She was clearly a crowd favorite. Her toughest competitor, Miss Ireland, was already out. If you watched the pageant, when it was already the Final Question, you could see Venus nervous. It was very obvious whenever the camera would hit her position. Her face was no longer confident. She was clearly anticipating the question that would be asked of her. And then came her turn. As you already know, she bungled that one. It cost her the crown.
Gloria Diaz was right. Had Venus used an interpreter, she could have expressed herself more clearly. No “major, major mistake” that people remembered from her. Remember Miriam Quiambao? The same thing happened. And other contestants in before and in between them. Ms. Diaz meant well in what she said about some Filipinos having a hard time speaking in English. It’s a fact. She just wants to remind beauty contestants like Venus to consider the use of an interpreter so that speaking in English during question and answer portions won’t cost us another crown.
I am really starting to get annoyed with ABS-CBN news programs need for sensationalism. They are going overboard on their “exclusives”! I understand that it’s their way of attracting viewers aside from providing “information”. But I do think it’s overkill most of the time!
There’s the torture video that they kept on showing again and again. Half of TV Patrol‘s newscast for the past two days was dedicated to showing the torture scene. And what is that torture scene, you might ask (esp. to those who are non-Filipinos)? It is of a man being tortured by the police. He was an alleged snatcher caught and in the process of interrogating the man, making him confess, he was stripped naked and his genitals was tied with a string and being pulled again and again by a policeman! It was allegedly done by Sr. Inspector Joselito Binayug who was already suspended pending investigation of the case. The Commission on Human Rights already stepped in and is conducting investigations of their own.
I know, I KNOW, that injustices like these need to be shown to the masses for awareness and for it to be squashed. But in my opinion, ABS-CBN should not show the clip of the torture scene again and again. There are kids watching the news with their parents! I am a grown woman and I cringed the first time I saw the video. I stopped watching after the first pull. Kids should not see that video. But TV Patrol showed the video a number of times within their news program!
I don’t know but have you noticed how ABS-CBN news programs have gone the route of tabloid journalism already? Watch even one TV Patrol ep and you will see what I’m talking about now.
And please, enough of the torture video please!
