Agora Gallery reviews the success of a prodigy
In June, 2011 Agora Gallery presented a truly unusual exhibition in its Gallery II premises. Four-year-old Aelita Andre, whose works have been an international sensation since she was two, had her first New York solo exhibition at Agora Gallery.
Reaction to Aelita’s exhibition at Agora Gallery
There was enormous interest shown in Aelita’s work before the exhibition even opened, both by the media and by collectors who were able to view her paintings on the internet, on Agora Gallery‘s online gallery ARTmine. Stories about this artistic prodigy appeared online and in the mainstream media, in sources ranging from the New York Times to Sky online, as well as in worldwide news media including the BBC, Britain’s Daily Telegraph and Australia’s ABC news.
The opening reception was a huge success, with delighted viewers admiring the art on display and discussing Aelita’s undoubted talent. The start of the reception, however, was Aelita herself, who enjoyed welcoming guests to ‘her space’ at Agora Gallery and watching their reactions with a beaming smile on her face.
Normally, Agora Gallery reviews only the work of artists who are 18 or over, but when Angela Di Bello saw Aelita’s portfolio submission it didn’t even occur to her to question the artist’s age. She was immensely impressed by the command of color displayed by the works, as well as the playful, lively feeling they encapsulated and engendered.
Many viewers have felt the same, and Aelita’s exhibition at Agora Gallery has been so successful that every single piece that formed part of the show had been sold within the first two weeks. The gallery is now planning an extension to the exhibition to present the works which Aelita, who had complained that she missed painting, has created in the United States.
