For his 40th birthday, Marco Nordio traveled to Karnten, Austria, to compete in an Ironman triathlon competition. Nordio’s family came from Italy to attend this event and to cheer him on as he crossed the finish line.

Rich History of Austria

In addition to these grueling athletic competitions, Austria has a great deal to offer guests and tourists to this historic land. Originally settled by Celts, Austria has a rich cultural heritage that includes influences from Rome, Bavaria, the Slavic regions and the Frankish empire under Charlemagne.

Some of the most important cultural attractions in Austria are located in the city of Vienna. This cosmopolitan center produced numerous famed classical composers including Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert and Johann Strauss, known as the father of the waltz. Vienna is also known as the home of Ludwig van Beethoven and was the scene of some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s greatest triumphs in the classical music field. The influence of Vienna and its musical scene is still felt in many modern compositions and popular songs.

Austria also holds great importance as the home and birthplace of influential scientists, mathematicians and researchers. Sigmund Freud is perhaps the most famous of these scientific minds, but Karl Popper, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ernst Mach and Erwin Schrödinger were also natives of Austria. Schrödinger is primarily remembered for his famed “Schrödinger’s cat” thought experiment, which was intended to illustrate a principle of modern quantum mechanics by presenting a situation in which two states of being were superimposed at the same time.
