Invoice

Why is a statement for goods or services for which we owe payment called an invoice?

Invoice is a term that came from France. It is an alteration of the obsolete English invoyes, the plural form of invoy. The latter comes from the French envoi (a sending or shipment), which comes from envoyer (to send).

Closely connected to envoyer is the English word envoy (messenger, representative, diplomat), a derivative of the Latin in via (on one’s way, en route).
