Suicide over tuition.

Before anything else, let me convey my condolences to the family of the UP student who committed suicide over tuition. I know how painful it is to lose a love one and how hard to carry on with life without them. I pray for understanding and strength for the people she left behind.

But let’s get on with the real reason why I am writing this post… suicide. The University of the Philippines student committed suicide because she was told to go on a leave of absence (LOA) as she couldn’t pay her Php10,000 tuition fee (approx. US$250). I have read somewhere that there might be some other stuff in the student’s mind when she took her own life. It might not be just about the tuition fee. You know what? Whatever the reason(s) was(were), suicide should never have been her only option. It’s just tuition fee! She could have worked part-time to save money or she could have approached a government institution, a local government official, or a non-government organization (NGO) to ask for help. But, no, she opted to kill herself over not being able to finish the semester. Let me note here that she was a freshman student and she could have had years ahead of her to finish college.

I am not being insensitive here. I know the student might have been depressed. Her mind might have been compromised somehow. But you know what’s irking me? The people around her didn’t even rally behind her! They could have told the poor girl that there was still hope for her to finish college and she just needed to wait a while. One setback was nothing compared to the many obstacles that she could have faced ahead of her. And the successes awaiting her! Close to 24 hours without DSL!

Almost 24 hours without DSL and all because someone might have tampered with our line. Damn it! This is one of the many reasons why I want to transfer into another neighborhood. In this area, only a handful of us have internet lines. I suspect that those who know how to do it tamper the lines so they can connect to the net, too. What I find so maddening about this is we the legitimate subscribers are the ones who encounter problems while they are enjoying their free connection without hassles.

Double darn!

I really wish we can move to a brand new home very soon.

Living in the metro

My sister and I are often on the lookout for a place where we can move into. A new home for the family. A neighborhood where it’s quiet and near the road as much as possible. We are not looking for a grand place to live in. We just want a modest home, one which we won’t be too embarrassed to invite friends over.

But you know what? Almost all the houses in the metro, in the vicinity where we currently reside, are being sold at exorbitant prices. You need to have at least 3M pesos (roughly US$75,000) to buy a modest townhouse or condominium unit. If you want a detached house and lot, be ready with at least 5M pesos (roughly US$125,000)!

Yes, there are houses being sold at lower prices. But I’m talking about houses in the far Northern QC or those in the Rizal areas. Places too far from schools, hospitals and offices.

The whole family wants to stay in the Quezon City area, preferably in this same area we are now but in a different neighborhood. I guess I have to work so much harder each day and save up every extra penny I have to be able to buy that brand new house for the family and to stay living in the metro.

Choosing domain names

Domain Name. How important is it? Do you know that in this virtual world, your domain name is your address. You can direct your family, friends, and those people you want to know you to your domain. For businesses, this is your virtual business address. So you can just imagine how important a domain name is.

When I was just starting in professional blogging, it took me weeks to think of a suitable domain name for my blog. I was thinking of something that will be catchy, something that will easily be remembered when bloggers will think of me. Thus, sasha-says.com was born.

I have other blogs and the domain names of those blogs are well thought of. I spend hours, days thinking of an appropriate name for the blog I have in mind before I go and register one. Now, if you have a domain name in mind, either for a blog or a web site, think about it first. Remember, you are stuck with it for a year when you register it. Plus, there are some who will associate your blog to that domain name already and when you change it, it will lose its identity. Remember that before making a decision to register a domain name you have in mind, okay?
