What To Look For In A Kayak Seat

When you go kayaking, it is important that you have the right kayak. Kayaks come in many different forms and one of the most important parts is the seat. If you’re going to be kayaking for long periods of time, you will need your seat to be comfortable and suitable for any sort of back pain that you might have. This is why we have put together some tips on what you should look for in a kayak seat. Make sure to keep reading if you’d like to find out more.

kayak

Back Support

It is very important that your kayak seat has good back support if you are planning on using it a lot. You will want to be able to stay out there for as long as possible without getting a sore back. This is why you should look for a seat with a heightened, reinforced back. This article suggests that this sort of seat can help to support your mid-back and shoulder region. Don’t sacrifice height for style if you want to have back support in your kayak.

Cushioning

Kayaking can be very strenuous, and it is important that you are as comfortable as possible. This is why you should try to choose a kayak seat that has some good cushioning. The material that the seat is made from is very important and you should aim for one with gel pockets which can make the whole experience a lot more comfortable.

The Type Of Kayak

When choosing your kayak seat, you should also remember that there are different types of kayaks. It is important that you know which sort of seats will fit in sit-on-top kayaks and which ones will fit right inside your kayak. Makes sure that you don’t invest in one that won’t fit in your kayak as this can be very disappointing.

Durability

If you are going to spend a lot of money on a new kayak seat, then you will want to choose one that is durable. This is especially important for those who are going to be paddling through some tough waters and want to be able to depend on the kayak seat for a long time. Make sure that you do your research and find a seat that is going to be durable and not get destroyed after a few trips.

The Design

Our final tip for those choosing a new kayak seat is to make sure that the design suits what you are looking for. You might have already chosen your kayak and so you will want to make sure that your seat looks good in it. For many people, their kayak is a possession that they are proud of and so there is no shame in choosing one with a nice design. It is important, however, that you remember not to compromise durability or comfort for fashion.

Make sure to follow these tips when choosing your next kayak seat.

3 Reasons to Visit Crete

The Mediterranean is home to a number of beautiful, picturesque landscapes. Among these, Crete stands out at one of the most breath-taking. Greece’s biggest island is home to a number of things that we think of as being characteristically Greek. From the eponymous Greek salad to feta cheese, even the famous mythical Minotaur, Crete has inspired many of the defining features of Greek civilisation.

Crete Greece

While the Greek mainland is home to a large number and diverse array of culturally and historically significant sites, the island of Crete still retains a great deal of its original atmosphere. Being an island separated from the mainland, Crete has not had the same kind of cultural evolution as the rest of Greece. This makes Crete much more traditional in many ways, and it is a large enough island to support a culture that is subtly different to most of Greece.

There are several reasons why you should consider visiting Crete next time you are in the mood to take a Mediterranean holiday. Here are just three of the best reasons to visit Crete at least once in your life.

An Ancient Capital and Home of the Minotaur

The legend of Theseus and the Minotaur is one of the most famous from Ancient Greece. The Minotaur was the bane of Minos’ (the King of Crete) rule over the island. The Minotaur was imprisoned in a labyrinth beneath the King’s castle but demanded a yearly sacrifice of 14 people, seven young men, and women. Theseus, the son of the King of Athens took exception to the arrangement. He sailed to Crete and defeated the Minotaur. Using a thread, as suggested to him by Ariadne, the Cretan princess, Theseus was able to find his way back out of the labyrinth again.

Needless to say, the actual story is a lot better than that summary! The whole tale is set in the ancient city of Knossos. In fact, this is Europe’s oldest city and today is an archaeological site well worth visiting. Knossos was the centre of the Minoan civilisation, to which King Minos belonged. It is a truly fascinating experience to see the ruins of this mythical city and to compare the famous legend with the historical site.

Knossos is also located near to Crete’s largest city, Heraklion, making it a really fantastic day trip to take. Most schoolchildren in the UK will study the Ancient Greeks at some point. If your children are learning about Ancient Greece and the Greek myths, this is a really wonderful opportunity to make their learning a little more interactive.

Tropical (But Friendly) Waters

If there is one thing that the Mediterranean region is known for, it is the idyllic coastlines. When we think of glistening golden sands, dampened by the rhythmic tidal flows of deep blue waters, it is the Mediterranean that most of us are imagining. Crete is renowned for the beauty of its mountains and cliffs, but these are far from the only types of landscape the island has to offer.

There is a long list of beaches on Crete. And really, you can’t go wrong with picking one! Even if you arrive at a beach that isn’t to your liking, there is a whole coastline of alternatives! One beach that does deserve a special mention is Matala. Matala contains a network of caves that housed a group of free-spirited hippies during the 1960s. Speaking of which, the caves and cliffs that mark the Cretan coastline are worth exploring themselves.

An Authentic Villa Experience

If you are planning on staying in one of Crete’s urban centres, and you want to make sure that you are bang in the centre where the action is, then like most European cities, you will be looking at Hotels or Airbnbs for accommodation. However, while Crete is a pretty big island, it is small enough that transporting yourself around it is nice and easy. It’s not so small that you can travel everywhere on foot, but it is small enough that you can stay in an authentic, relatively rural villa, while still having easy access to the major towns and cities on the island.

There are a number of holiday companies who offer Villas in Crete, among them Blue Villas, which have these villas in Crete. Blue Villas is one of the best established and most popular. Their villas are perfectly situated to balance the remoteness and privacy of a rural setting, with access to the more modern trappings that Crete has to offer.

Greece is a very popular holiday option. The unique cuisine, culture, and history make Greece one of the most enriching places to visit, but the island of Crete remains somewhat overlooked. Crete is, as some islanders like to joke, more Greek than Greece. If you are fascinated by this place, and the myths and legends it has spawned, you should definitely consider visiting Crete.

3 Simple Ways To Stay Safe On Your Travels

travel

Whether you enjoy taking an annual vacation or you are more of a wanderlust seeker and a perpetual traveller, you no doubt want to have fun in whatever far-flung destination you have your sights set on. However, alongside the fun and frolics, you also need to be safe. You might be a lone backpacker, a couple venturing off the beaten track or a family heading to a well-established tourist resort. It doesn’t really matter – you still need to have your wits about you. Plenty of hazards and risks are in your way when travelling, from illness to crime and from specific cultural customs to natural disasters. Take a look at these three simple ways you can keep yourself safe when embarking on your next travel adventure.

Do Your Research

If you’re planning on taking a jaunt on a jeep excursion to see the wildebeest migrating across the plains of the Masai Mara or if you’re tempted to take a helicopter flight over the majestic Grand Canyon, you need to do your research beforehand. Plenty of unregulated companies will offer such excursions. You need to head to the Internet and source the company with the best reviews and the finest safety records. Lawyers such as Slack & Davis have over twenty years experience in aviation law so could provide you with the necessary advice should you require an attorney’s services.

Use A Money Belt

It sounds obvious, but it’s vital that when you’re out and about travelling you hide your possessions from wandering hands. Even in the most crime-free regions of destinations, there is still a threat of theft and pickpocketing. By keeping your money and passports well hidden in a money belt that you can wear under your clothes, you are ensuring that, even if your bag does get stolen, you have the necessary means by which to survive. You should also utilise any in-room safe that your accommodation might have and only ever take out what you need with you.

Don’t Be Too Spontaneous

While it’s lovely to do fun and adventurous activities while on vacation, such as a bungee jump for adrenaline junkies, a hike in a national park for those less inclined to give themselves a panic attack or a simple day at the beach, it’s a good idea to plan your days out. Never take a jaunt with a person you have only just met in your resort, even if the outing sounds awesome. You could be venturing into the unknown with a stranger and putting yourself in danger. Instead, spend some time getting to know the individual, use your judgement and head out after a few days in a group. This way you can refrain from putting yourself in an unsafe situation.

Hot-footing it to a far-flung destination to immerse yourself in a new culture, whether this is for a fortnight or for a few months, is exhilarating and life-affirming. However, it’s vital that you still keep yourself safe to ensure maximum travel confidence and enjoyment.

Boracay

      1. Boracay, Aklan
This small island is just 300 kilometres from Manila, to the south in the Aklan province. It’s famous for its pristine waters and powdery white sandy beaches. Boracay is easily one of the biggest tourist destinations in the area with over 350 resorts. Those resorts in total feature around 2,000 rooms and the great part is if you want luxury – you will find it, but if you’re on a budget, you’ll find somewhere appropriate.

It really does have something for everyone, whether you’re interested in sunbathing all day and hitting bars and restaurants in the evening or you have plans to indulge in water sports – it’s all there. The area’s most famous beach is White Beach, and it was once known as the world’s finest beach. The island itself has been named the best in the world, too. The perfect time to visit is between November and May as monsoon season runs from June to October. There are no direct flights, though, so you’ll need to grab a boat.

      2. Coron Island, Palawan
If you are looking for beauty, you can’t look past Coron Island. This island also shares a name with the local city’s largest town. The island is home to steep cliffs of limestone, white sandy beaches as well as seven different mountainous lakes. It regularly appears in top ten lists for its scuba diving spots. When you look beyond the incredible rock formations, there is more, secret lagoons with crystal waters and a secret beach. It may be a struggle to get there, but it’s worth it. There are two ways to gain entry to the secret beach – swim through the sea tunnel or climb the cliffs.

This area isn’t as busy as the other beaches as it isn’t a hotspot for tourists, however, going off-peak is a great way to avoid crowds altogether. Once you fly into Busuanga you can grab a bus or van to Coron. It takes around 45 minutes, but do know you can’t stay overnight – so if you’re planning a proper trip you’ll need to stay in Coron, Busuanga.

      3. Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and plenty of water sports to be had, Pagudpud is basically the North’s Boracay. There is one big difference between in and Boracay, though; there are no shopping spots here. In fact, you’re lucky to run across an ATM so make sure you have cash at the ready. What you will find are incredible attractions such as Kapurpurawan Rock, Kabigan Falls, Bangui windmills, and the Patapat Viaduct. You will probably want to rent a car so you can see everything.

      4. Mactan Island
It’s located in Cebu, which just happens to be one of the world’s best islands. It’s a big tourist attraction and it’s the perfect spot for snorkelling and diving. You can also island hop and check out jet skiing, para-sailing, sailing, and more. The great thing is that because you’re in Cebu there is so much more to explore than with the other islands. It’s the perfect holiday balance of excitement and relaxation.

The best time of year to visit is between January and Mary, you can expect rain in the remaining months. Though that’s no guarantee that you won’t see rain at all while visiting, it’s one of the Philippines wettest regions.

Don’t forget to try some of the local food. Filipino culture is rich and their cuisine is incredible – don’t miss out on the whole roasted pig, pancit, lumpia, kare-kare, singang, and more. While you’re there, why not try the infamous Durian fruit. It’s known as the king of fruit, but it’s also known for being banned from hotels due to the stench. While it may be overpowering on the nose, the fruit itself is delicious – it’s sweet, it’s savoury, and it’s creamy. It’s truly a unique fruit that anyone travelling the Philippines must try for themselves.
